Should You Submit Your Site to Several FREE Web Directories?

Written by Rahman Mehraby on . Posted in Directory Submission, Travel Marketing Blog

TraveList is a free travel directory, but I'm against submitting your site to free web directories. I've explains why and offered other methods to get links if that's what you need.

Someone has recently asked me if I could help him with a list of other free web directories so that he could submit his website to all of them. The answer was not easy, because he’s a nice friend and I didn’t want him to think that I had hidden some information from him. Now, I think it could be in your mind too. So, I must answer this question publicly.

I’ve Got a FREE Travel Directory, But I Don’t Approve Free Web Directories!

FREE Directory SubmissionIt may sound a bit weird although many may think I don’t do this to avoid introducing my competitors. It’s not true. Do you know why? Because I would have had some competitors if I know of any similar free travel directories. In fact,  it’s not only about specialized directory in travel sector. I don’t know of any other web directories that provides such features as we have at TraveList Listing Package!

As a matter of fact, I’ve started the free travel directory as part of TraveList marketing platform because there were not such a rich listing package to help travel businesses. Take a look at the main description for instance. Do you know of any other website that allows you to write 600-1500 words with 5 links in it? Did you know that it meant description below 600 words isn’t accepted and isn’t published?

Writing Main Description Is A Challenge by Itself!

As no other travel directories have already provided such an opportunity for travel websites to introduce themselves and their services, it’s become a challenge for new members to write a rich content for their directory listings. That’s why as of today, TraveList has got several members, but they have not even submitted their listings for approval!

Traditional web directories allow a very limited characters, few words, to be submitted to describe your businesses. What we’ve asked our members is to write at least 600 words. They can even link to inner pages of their sites. So, they should allocate some time to this task and completely fill out the form including the text area for the main description.

TraveList has even published a manual to explain and inspire what to write and how to introduce yourselves at your main description. I’m sure our directory members will soon come up with their profiles and we will see powerful listings like no other places on the web.

Why I Say NO to Other FREE Web Directories?

Usually, free is too useless and paid cannot come up with the features we have here at TraveList. In addition, having ONE powerful profile that ranks well for you and gets enhanced by the upcoming links, likes, tweets, shares, comments, etc, is better than having lots of weak directories.

Please Forget about Link Exchanging with web directories. Some of them are free ONLY if you post a link to them with a beautiful banner they offer you to publish at your site. If you do this to get links from other sites,   search engines have announced  long time ago that such links don’t prove the usefulness of your site. In one word, it’s a waste of time to exchange links with them.

Get One-Way Links from Relevant Sites Instead

The best links you can get are the one-way links from the websites whose content is only about travel industry. One instance of getting such links is to publish content as a guest blogger at other sites. They will allow you to have a biography at the end where you post your keyword-rich links to your site. I know it takes more time and energy to do this, but the result is much better and valuable.

Find specialized travel directories that offer you several inner links to your site from inside some relevant text you can publish to describe your business. I honestly don’t know of any, but recommend it if you find such websites.

Submit travel press releases (not free ones without the possibility of posting links in them) to news distribution websites. It will be a lot better if they are travel-related too.

Write and submit travel-related articles and submit them to article directories. I don’t mean mass submission to large number of them. I recommend to submit only to one major article directory. If you know of any that is known as one of the best in its type, like ezinearticles.com, go for it. If you know of a travel-specific article directory, submit to them. They let you post a few links to inner pages of your site too.

What Else Do You Recommend to Get One-Way Links?

I’m sure there are a lot of other methods to get one-way links to your website. I just suffice to mention a few of them here and leave it to you to share with others if you know of any other ways. Please take action and let us know if you are aware of any other ways.

You can gain a lot of link value, especially in the beginning,
by using directories. However, it pays to be careful about what sites you submit to.
Some websites are called “link farms” because they are directories of tens of thousands of sites without really giving any value.
Google can sometimes penalize websites for doing this.

Why do you say there’s a lot of link value in mass submission to free web directories? Are they authority websites? Are they well known for a particular topic? Are they content relevant? Are they content rich? Are they …

And you say specially in the beginning … Why in the beginning? Shouldn’t it last longer and perform well even later if it’s a useful method?

I agree with you about “link farms”. Google ALWAYS penalizes you for submitting to them.
